The history of Ireland
In Ireland, there were 88 licensed distilleries in the mid-19th century, and Irish whiskey was then the largest category of spirits in the world. Exports fell because of wartime restrictions on distilling, US Prohibition and the trade war with Britain in the 1930s, and by the mid-1980s only two distilleries were left. The Cooley Distillery opened in 1987, and about 50 distilleries are said to be operating today.
