ウイスキーのラベルを見ると、英語の綴りが、2通りあります。
On whisky labels, the English spelling comes in two forms.
綴りの理由と、語源、ラベルの度数や「12年」の見方を整理します。
We go through the reason for the spellings, the origin of the word, and how to read the strength and “12 years” on the label.
WhiskyとWhiskeyの使い分けHow Whisky and Whiskey are used
| 綴り Spelling | 使う産地 Where it is used |
|---|---|
| Whisky Whisky | ジャパニーズ、スコッチ、カナディアン Japanese, Scotch, Canadian |
| Whiskey Whiskey | アイリッシュ Irish |
| どちらも Both | アメリカン American |
ウイスキー発祥の地を争う、英国とアイルランドで、英国がWhisky、アイルランドがWhiskeyを使っていたことによります。アメリカでWhiskeyの綴りも使われているのは、ウイスキー蒸溜所の創設者に、アイルランド出身の人がいたためです。
Britain and Ireland compete over the birthplace of whisky, and Britain used “Whisky” while Ireland used “Whiskey.” Both spellings are used in America because some founders of American distilleries came from Ireland.
「key」は鍵(カギ)の綴りなので、スコッチなどを「カギ無しのウイスキー」、アイリッシュを「カギ有りのウイスキー」と呼ぶこともあります。
Because “key” is the spelling of the word for a key, Scotch and others are sometimes called “whisky without a key,” and Irish “whiskey with a key.”

語源は「生命の水」The origin of the word is “water of life”
ウイスキー、オー・ド・ヴィー(ブランデーのフランス語)、ウオッカ、アクアヴィットなどの蒸溜酒の名前は、どれも「生命の水」に由来します。蒸溜の方法を広めたのは、錬金術師で、各地の地酒から蒸溜酒を造ったとき、ラテン語で「生命の水」を意味する「アクア・ヴィテ」と呼びました。
The names of distilled liquors such as whisky, eau-de-vie (French for brandy), vodka and aquavit all derive from “water of life.” It was alchemists who spread the method of distillation, and when they made distilled liquor from local liquors in various places, they called it “aqua vitae,” Latin for “water of life.”
| 地域 Region | 呼び名 Name |
|---|---|
| アイルランド・スコットランド Ireland and Scotland | ウシュク・ベーハー → ウイスキー Uisce beatha, which became whisky |
| フランス France | オー・ド・ヴィー Eau-de-vie |
| ロシア Russia | ズィズネニャ・ワダ → ウオッカ Zhiznennaya voda, which became vodka |
| 北欧 Northern Europe | アクアヴィット(ラテン語が少し変わっただけの名前) Aquavit (a name only slightly changed from the Latin) |
ラベルのアルコール分Alcohol strength on the label
ウイスキーのラベルには、「アルコール分40度」「40%」のように表示されています。この表示は、酒税の保全及び酒類業組合等に関する法律で、義務づけられているものです。アルコール分は、温度15度のときに、原容量100の中に含まれるエチルアルコールの容量を指す、と酒税法で決められています。
A whisky label shows the strength as “Alcohol 40 degrees” or “40%.” This display is required by the Act on Preservation of Liquor Tax and Liquor Business Associations. The Liquor Tax Act specifies that alcohol content means the volume of ethyl alcohol contained in 100 volumes of the original at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.
「12」「12 Years Old」の意味What “12” and “12 Years Old” mean
ラベルの「12」や、「Aged 12 Years」「12 Years Old」は、熟成年数の表示です。熟成年数の違う原酒をブレンドしたウイスキーに、熟成年数を表示するときは、ブレンドした原酒のうち、最も熟成年数の若いものの年数を表示する、と、「ウイスキーの表示に関する公正競争規約」が定めています。
The “12” on a label, or “Aged 12 Years” or “12 Years Old,” indicates the years of aging. When the age is shown on a whisky blended from base whiskies of different ages, the Fair Competition Code for the Labeling of Whisky requires showing the age of the youngest of the blended base whiskies.
- 「12」とあれば、最も熟成の短い原酒が12年で、12年以上の原酒が使われている
If a label says “12,” the youngest base whisky is 12 years old, and base whiskies of 12 years or more are used. - ウイスキーは、1樽ごとに熟成のピークがあり、貯蔵の年数が長いほど良い、というわけではない。ブレンダーが、これを見極めて製品にする
Each cask of whisky has its own peak of maturity, and longer storage is not necessarily better. The blender judges this and turns it into a product.
お酒は20歳になってから。飲むときは適量を守りましょう。
Drinking is for those aged 20 and over. Please drink in moderation.
