Whisky can only call itself “Scotch” if it meets detailed conditions set by British regulations.
We go through the main conditions, the five categories and the rules on regional names.

The five categories
Description |
|---|---|
Made at a single distillery from water and malted barley only, distilled in pot stills. |
Made at a single distillery and not qualifying as either a single malt or a blended whisky. |
| ブレンデッドモルト Blended malt | 2つ以上のシングルモルトを混ぜたもの(複数の蒸溜所) A mix of two or more single malts (from multiple distilleries). |
| ブレンデッドグレーン Blended grain | 2つ以上のシングルグレーンを混ぜたもの(複数の蒸溜所) A mix of two or more single grains (from multiple distilleries). |
A mix of single malt and single grain. |
Blended whisky is said to have been born in 1853, making it possible to enjoy the same taste every time, whereas whisky had until then differed from cask to cask. This is said to have been the start of Scotch spreading from a local drink of one region of Scotland to a spirit enjoyed around the world.
Rules on regional names
Scottish distilleries are protected by name under three “regions” (Highland, Lowland and Speyside) and two “localities” (Campbeltown and Islay). A protected name may be used on a label or in advertising only for Scotch whisky distilled in that region or locality.
Names |
|---|---|
Highland, Lowland, Speyside |
Campbeltown, Islay |
Speyside is said to hold nearly half of all Scotch distilleries and is called the mecca of whisky.
The discovery of aging and the smoky aroma
In the 18th century, when the British government began to levy heavy taxes on Scottish distillers, people are said to have hidden whisky in casks deep in the mountains where officials could not reach. When they drank it years later, it had turned into a mellow, amber-colored drink. This is thought to be how aging was discovered (there are various accounts).
One of the characteristics of Scotch is its smoky flavor. Peat is burned when the malted barley is dried, so its aroma is carried into the malt. It is an aroma common to malt whisky and blended whisky.
Drinking is for those aged 20 and over. Please drink in moderation.
