ワンショットは何ml?How many ml is one shot?
ショットは、お酒の「1杯分」のことで、シングルともいいます。日本では、ふつう30mlを、ワンショットとする場合が多く、ワンフィンガーも、ほぼ同じ量を指します。これはアメリカでも通じます。英国では、事情が違います。
A shot is “one serving” of liquor, also called a single. In Japan, one shot is usually 30 ml, and one finger means about the same amount. This is also understood in America. In Britain, the situation is different.

フィンガーとはWhat is a finger?
タンブラーに注いだウイスキーの量を表す、便宜的な単位です。シングルの量をタンブラーに注ぐと、横にした指1本分の深さになり、ダブルは2本分の深さになります。そこから、ワンフィンガー、ツーフィンガーという言い方が使われるようになりました。
It is a convenient unit for the amount of whisky poured into a tumbler. When a single is poured into a tumbler, it comes to the depth of one finger held sideways, and a double comes to two fingers. This gave rise to the expressions one finger and two fingers.
もともとは、英国で1400年代のころから使われた、簡単な量り方で、指1本分の幅は、約3/4インチ(約1.9cm)とされてきました。
It was originally a simple way of measuring used in Britain from around the 1400s, and the width of one finger has been taken as about 3/4 inch (about 1.9 cm).
プルーフとはWhat is proof?
お酒のアルコール濃度を表す単位のひとつです。日本では、容量の割合(%、度)で表示しますが、アメリカや英国では、プルーフを使います。
It is one of the units that express the alcohol concentration of liquor. In Japan it is shown as a percentage of volume (% or degrees), but in America and Britain proof is used.

チェイサーと、水割りの水Chasers, and the water for mizuwari
チェイサーは、強いお酒をストレートで飲んだあとに、追いかけて飲むものです。ふつうは水を使い、ソーダ、ジンジャーエール、ビールなどを好む人もいます。
A chaser is what you drink right after drinking a strong liquor neat. Water is usually used, and some people prefer soda, ginger ale or beer.
水割りの水は、軟水が無難といわれます。WHOでは、硬度60mg/L以下を軟水、120mg/L以下を中程度の軟水としています。
Soft water is said to be the safe choice for the water in mizuwari. The WHO classes water of 60 mg/L hardness or less as soft and 120 mg/L or less as moderately soft.
お酒は20歳になってから。飲むときは適量を守りましょう。
Drinking is for those aged 20 and over. Please drink in moderation.
