アメリカのウイスキーは、原料の穀物の割合、蒸溜するときのアルコール度数、貯蔵する樽によって、種類が決まっています。
American whiskey types are defined by the share of grain in the mash, the strength at distillation and the barrels used for storage.
ウイスキーの基本(The class “whisky”)
アメリカのルールでは、ウイスキーは、穀物を発酵させた液を、95%未満のアルコール度数で蒸溜したものです。ウイスキーらしい香味があり、オーク樽で貯蔵し(コーンウイスキーを除く)、40%以上で瓶詰めします。
Under the US rules, whisky is a distillate of a fermented grain mash, distilled at less than 95% alcohol by volume, with the taste and aroma of whisky, stored in oak barrels (except corn whisky) and bottled at not less than 40% alcohol by volume.
綴りは「whisky」と「whiskey」のどちらでも構いません。
The word may be spelled either “whisky” or “whiskey”.

バーボンやライなどの蒸溜は、80%(160プルーフ)以下で行います。バーボンには、着色料や香料などを加えられません。
Bourbon, rye and similar types are distilled at 80% ABV (160 proof) or less. Bourbon may not contain added colouring, flavouring or blending materials.
「ストレート」と「ブレンデッド」(Straight and blended)
「ストレート」は、内側を焼いた新品のオーク樽で、2年以上貯蔵したウイスキーにつけられる呼び名です。表示はあとから選べます。
“Straight” is an optional designation for whisky stored in charred new oak barrels for at least two years.
ブレンデッドウイスキーは、ストレートウイスキーを、プルーフガロン換算で20%以上含みます。残りにはウイスキーや、中性スピリッツ(最大80%)を使えます。
Blended whisky contains at least 20% straight whisky on a proof gallon basis; the rest may be other whisky or neutral spirits (up to 80%).
アメリカン・シングルモルト(American single malt whisky)
アメリカのシングルモルトは、大麦麦芽100%を使い、アメリカ国内の同じ蒸溜所で蒸溜します。樽は700リットル以下で、アメリカ国内で貯蔵します。着色は、表示したカラメルに限られます。
American single malt whisky is made from 100% malted barley, distilled at one US distillery, and stored in barrels of 700 litres or less in the United States. Only disclosed caramel colouring is allowed.
スコッチ・アイリッシュ・カナディアン(Scotch, Irish, Canadian)
スコッチ、アイリッシュ、カナディアンは、それぞれの国で、その国の法律にしたがってつくられたウイスキーに限られます。アメリカの規則でも、「その国特有の産物」として扱います。
Scotch, Irish and Canadian whisky must be made in their own countries in compliance with those countries’ laws. US rules treat them as distinctive products of those countries.
「バーボン」の名前は、アメリカで蒸溜し、貯蔵したものにしか使えません。
The word “bourbon” may be used only for whisky distilled and aged in the United States.
